1. Cross-border payment platform launched by IMF The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has unveiled a new cross-border payment platform known as 'A Single Platform for Those Payments',or ASPTP. The system has been designed with the purpose of speeding up and reducing the cost of cross-border transactions. IMF officials have identified this as a major problem to be addressed,given that international transfers take longer and cost more than domestic ones. According to the IMF,the launch of ASPTP could lead to reduced costs of as much as $20bn,with funds settling within 24 hours.
2. Potential advantages of ASPTP The ASPTP platform relies heavily on technology,and as such,is designed to provide benefits above and beyond those of traditional payment systems. The platform incorporates a single ledger system that eliminates the need for a mediator or a correspondent bank to facilitate transactions. In addition,the platform operates upon a technology infrastructure that enables transactions to occur in real-time. Advocates of the system have suggested that it could lead to a significant increase in financial inclusion in developing countries,as well as a boost in transparency and security in financial transactions.
3. Challenges to the adoption of ASPTP While the IMF has identified the launch of ASPTP as a significant step forward in addressing problems with cross-border payments,there are a number of challenges that need to be overcome before the system can be deployed globally. Chief among these is the issue of ensuring regulatory compliance in all territories where the platform may operate,along with overcoming potential infrastructure challenges and addressing issues of security and trust. The IMF is committed to working with central banks and regulators in various countries to ensure that these issues are dealt with to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
