Vitalik Buterin has weighed in on the potential impact of zkEVMs at the protocol level,saying it could speed up verification processes on the base layer and would not compromise decentralization or security. Buterin believes that integrating a zkEVM at Ethereum's first layer is possible and would enable Ethereum Virtual Machines to execute smart contracts with ZK proofs. He acknowledges some challenges such as latency issues and data inefficiency,but believes they can be overcome while preserving the multiclient philosophy of Ethereum. Various scaling solutions such as those from Polygon,ConsenSys,Scroll,zkSync,and Immutable are working on their own implementations of zkEVM to increase throughput and reduce transaction costs.
