Silicon Valley Bank's collapse has sparked fears of a financial crisis similar to that of 2008. Despite the bank being one of the few offering services to crypto companies,crypto was not directly responsible for its downfall. The assettoliability mismatch,caused by higher deposits than credit during the COVID19 pandemic and rapid interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve,led to a liquidity crisis for SVB and other banks. Crypto markets were affected briefly due to counterparty risk on the part of stablecoin issuer Circle but recovered quickly as Circle found alternative methods to move its funds out of SVB. Despite criticism from Cathie Wood and others,regulators are working on a recovery plan with measures to protect depositors. However,questions remain as to whether this crisis could have been avoided in the first place.
