A new study from Surfshark shows that requests for personal user data from Big Tech firms such as Apple,Google and Microsoft by global governments have increased by 25% in 2021. The US requested more than double the accounts per 100,000 users than all countries in the European Union combined. Apple had the fewest requests with just 416,000 accounts requested during the study period. Decentralization and Web3 tools have often been touted as solutions to overcome Big Tech’s monopoly on user information.
