Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao is summonsed by the US District Court over SEC action The US Federal Court has issued a summons to Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao to appear for a deposition in relation to a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against his company. The SEC had accused Binance of conducting unregistered securities offerings worth over $3.5 billion,and also of failing to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. Zhao has maintained that the charges are baseless,and has argued that Binance is fully compliant with AML guidelines in each jurisdiction it operates.

2. SEC Lawsuit filed against Binance The SEC had filed a lawsuit against Binance in April 2021 alleging that the cryptocurrency exchange had sold securities-like digital assets through initial coin offerings (ICOs) without registering them with the SEC. The regulator averred that Binance had made material misrepresentations and omissions in its marketing of tokens,thereby violating securities law. The lawsuit was seen as a major blow to Binance,which is the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume.

3. Binance response against SEC Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao has vehemently denied the SEC's allegations,arguing that the company had not sold securities and that the tokens in question were not securities. He has also contended that Binance is operating in a fully compliant manner with AML guidelines in every jurisdiction where it has a presence. Binance has since announced a number of measures to tighten compliance,including the hiring of former US Treasury official Brian Brooks as CEO of its US division.
